TMJ & Jaw Pain

Unclench. Your jaw deserves a break.

Clicking, popping, aching, locking. Jaw problems are exhausting, and they're more treatable than most people know. Physical therapy is a first-line answer.

Is this you?

Is your jaw on this list?

TMJ trouble comes in a few familiar flavors.

Why it happens

Your jaw and neck are partners.

Your jaw joint doesn't work alone. It coordinates with your neck posture on every bite, word, and yawn. When your head sits forward of your shoulders, the resting position of your jaw changes, and the joint and its muscles start working overtime. That connection is the piece most treatment misses.

Add clenching or grinding, often stress-driven, and the system never gets a rest. We treat the joint, the muscles that drive it, and the neck posture underneath, which is why the relief holds.

Myth vs. reality

Things you've heard that aren't true.

Bad information keeps a lot of people hurting longer than they should. Let's clear a few up.

"A night guard will fix it."

A guard protects your teeth from grinding, which matters, but it doesn't change the muscle tension or joint mechanics behind the pain. Most people need both pieces.

"It'll go away on its own."

Occasional clicking can be harmless, but persistent pain, locking, or limited opening tends to stick around until the pattern behind it changes.

"I'll probably need surgery."

TMJ surgery is genuinely rare. Conservative care, including physical therapy, is the recommended first line, and most people never need more.

How we treat it

Insurance & getting started

No referral needed. Most insurance accepted.

In Illinois you can start physical therapy without a doctor's referral, so there's nothing standing between you and relief. We accept most major plans and offer self-pay options. Not sure about your coverage? We'll check it for you before your first visit.

Good questions

TMJ & jaw pain, answered.

Physical therapy for a jaw? Really?
Really. The TMJ is a joint with muscles, like any other, and it responds to the same hands-on care and retraining. It's one of the more satisfying things we treat.
What happens in a TMJ session?
Gentle hands-on work inside and around the jaw, neck treatment, and specific exercises. Nothing dramatic, and most patients find sessions surprisingly comfortable.
Should I still see my dentist?
Yes. Dental factors like grinding and bite issues matter, and we coordinate with dentists regularly. Many of our TMJ patients are dentist referrals.
My jaw clicks but doesn't hurt. Should I worry?
Painless clicking alone often needs no treatment. If it comes with pain, locking, or limited opening, that's when it's worth an assessment.
How long does TMJ treatment take?
Many patients feel meaningful relief within four to six weeks. Long-standing cases take longer, and we'll give you an honest read at your first visit.
