Applied Functional Science®

The science of how you actually move.

Applied Functional Science is the whole-body philosophy behind everything we do, and the reason we find causes other clinics miss. Every therapist on our team is trained in it.

What it can do for you

Why it matters for you.

A different lens leads to different results.

Finds the real cause

Your pain is traced through your whole body's chain reaction, not just examined where it hurts.

Assessment in real movement

You're evaluated standing and moving the way real life demands, not lying still on a table.

A plan that fits your life

Treatment is built from your goals and the movements your day actually requires.

Results that hold up

Because the cause is treated, improvement carries into the life you use your body for.

In plain English

So, what is it?

Applied Functional Science, developed by the Gray Institute, starts from a simple truth: when your feet hit the ground, every joint and muscle up the chain reacts. Your body works as one connected system in three dimensions, never as isolated parts.

It shapes how every therapist on our team looks at your body, which is why you get the same whole-chain thinking at every visit, in every clinic.

How we use it in your care

Not a technique. The lens for everything.

Most items on our treatments list are tools. Applied Functional Science is different: it's the lens that decides which tools your body actually needs, and where to aim them.

It's why your evaluation looks at how you squat, reach, and walk. It's why we may treat your hip to fix your knee. And it's why your plan is built around your movement, your goals, and your life, not a protocol off a shelf.

Common questions, up front

AFS, clarified.

The things everyone wants to know before their first visit.

Is this just a marketing term?

No. It's a formal discipline from the Gray Institute, grounded in biomechanics, that studies how the whole body moves as one connected system.

Will my visit feel different?

Yes, usually from the first evaluation. Expect to move, not just lie on a table, and expect your therapist to look far beyond the spot that hurts.

Does every therapist use it?

Yes. Applied Functional Science is the shared philosophy our whole team practices from, so you get the same whole-body care at every clinic.

Getting started

No referral needed. Most insurance accepted.

Good questions

Applied Functional Science, answered.

What makes AFS different from regular physical therapy?
Conventional care often examines the painful joint in isolation. AFS evaluates how your whole body moves in real life, which is how it finds causes that isolated exams miss.
Who on your team practices AFS?
All of us. It's the shared lens every Sports & Ortho therapist is trained to use, not an add-on a few clinicians offer.
Does AFS cost extra?
No. It's not an add-on, it's how we practice. Your visits are billed like standard physical therapy.
Will I get AFS-based care at any of your clinics?
Yes. Every therapist is trained in the approach, so you get the same whole-body care at all 10 clinics.
Do I need a referral?
For most plans, no. Illinois direct access lets you book directly with us. Medicare and workers' comp do require a referral, and we'll confirm your coverage before your first visit.
