Cupping Therapy

Lift the tension. Feel the release.

Gentle suction that lifts and decompresses tight tissue, boosting blood flow and easing deep muscle tension where pressure alone can't.

What it can do for you

What cupping can do for you.

Decompression, where most tools compress.

Releases deep tension

The lifting action decompresses layers of tissue that pushing techniques can't separate.

Boosts local blood flow

Fresh circulation to a starved, tight area helps it recover and calm down.

Eases muscle soreness

A favorite for athletes working through heavy training blocks and stubborn knots.

Frees tissue glide

Lifting layers apart helps muscle and fascia slide smoothly again.

In plain English

So, what is it?

Cupping places soft silicone or plastic cups on the skin and creates gentle suction. Instead of pressing into tissue like massage, it lifts, decompressing the layers and drawing blood flow into the area.

The circular marks it can leave look dramatic but aren't bruises in the painful sense. They're a sign of blood drawn to the surface and typically fade within days.

How we use it in your care

A tool, never the whole plan.

Cupping quiets tension and wakes up circulation, which makes it a great setup act. But tissue that got tight for a reason will tighten again if that reason stays.

Your therapist uses cupping to open a window, then fills it with the strengthening and movement retraining that address why the area was overworked in the first place.

Common questions, up front

Cupping, clarified.

The things everyone wants to know before their first visit.

Does it hurt?

No. Most people feel a strong pulling sensation that fades into relief. Many find it deeply relaxing.

What about the marks?

Common and painless, they fade in a few days. If you'd rather avoid visible marks for an event, tell your therapist and they'll adjust.

Is it just a trend?

The tool is ancient and the celebrity photos made it famous, but we use it for one reason: applied well, it works for the right problems.

Getting started

Good questions

Cupping, answered.

How long do the marks last?
Typically three to seven days, lighter each time as tissue health improves. They're painless.
Do you move the cups or leave them still?
Both, depending on the goal. Gliding cups treat a broader region; stationary cups focus on a specific knot.
Can I work out after cupping?
Usually yes. Many athletes schedule cupping around training, and your therapist will guide timing.
Is cupping covered by insurance?
When it's part of your physical therapy plan of care, it's typically included in the visit. We'll confirm your coverage first.
Do I need a referral?
For most plans, no. Illinois direct access lets you book directly with us. Medicare and workers' comp do require a referral, and we'll confirm your coverage before your first visit.
