Dry Needling

Release the tension holding you back.

A quick, targeted technique that calms deep muscle knots and trigger points, so you can move freely and get back to what you love. Always part of a whole-body plan built around your goals.

What it can do for you

Less tension, more freedom to move.

When a muscle is knotted up, everything around it has to work harder. Dry needling helps quiet that down so the rest of your recovery can move faster.

Releases deep muscle knots

Reaches the tight trigger points that foam rolling and stretching just can't, and helps them let go.

Eases stubborn pain

Calms the aches that keep coming back, including the ones that haven't budged with other approaches.

Restores your range of motion

Loosens what's been limiting you so you can reach, turn, and move without that catch or pull.

Speeds up your recovery

Frees up tight tissue so the strengthening and movement work in your plan actually sticks.

In plain English

So, what is it?

Dry needling uses a thin, sterile needle placed into a tight band of muscle, a trigger point, to prompt it to release. There's no medication involved, and it isn't acupuncture. Most people feel a quick twitch as the muscle lets go, then a wave of relief and looseness.

It's performed by our licensed, specially-trained physical therapists, and nothing happens that you're not comfortable with. We'll walk you through every step before we begin.

How we use it in your care

A tool, never the whole plan.

Dry needling on its own only quiets the spot that hurts. That's not how we work. We use it to unlock a tight muscle so we can get at the real reason it got tight in the first place, somewhere in how your whole body moves.

From there, your therapist rebuilds strength and movement so the tension doesn't just come back. The needling gets you comfortable enough to do the work that actually reaches your goal, whether that's lifting your kids, running again, or simply getting through the day pain-free.

Common questions, up front

Dry needling, clarified.

The three things everyone wants to know before their first visit.

Does it hurt?

The needles are far thinner than the ones you picture. Most people feel a small pinch and then a quick muscle twitch, followed by relief. Some soreness afterward is normal and fades within a day.

Is it safe?

Yes. It's performed only by licensed physical therapists with advanced training, using single-use sterile needles, after a full assessment to make sure it's right for you.

How is it different from acupuncture?

They only look similar. Acupuncture follows traditional energy pathways. Dry needling is based on modern anatomy and muscle science, aimed squarely at the trigger point causing your problem.

Good questions

Dry needling, answered.

Do I need a referral to be seen?
For most plans, no. In Illinois you can start physical therapy without a doctor's referral, so you can book directly with us. Medicare and workers' comp do require a referral, and we'll confirm your coverage before your first visit.
How many needles will be used?
It depends on the area and what your body needs, and your therapist will always explain the plan first. Often it's just a few, placed exactly where the tight trigger points are.
How will I feel afterward?
Many people feel looser and lighter right away. Mild soreness in the treated area for a day or so is normal, a lot like the feeling after a good workout, and it fades quickly.
How is it different from acupuncture?
They only look alike. Acupuncture follows traditional energy pathways; dry needling is based on modern muscle and movement science, aimed directly at the trigger point causing your symptoms.
Is dry needling covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by plan, and we're happy to check yours before your first visit. Self-pay options are available too. Request an appointment and we'll walk you through it.
How many sessions will I need?
Dry needling is one part of your plan, not a standalone fix, so it varies with your goals. Your therapist will give you an honest estimate after your assessment. Many people feel a difference within the first couple of visits.
