Hip and Knee Pain Relief Chicago

Francis H.

Initially limited movement and tenderness in right knee. Exercise, massage and stretches have increased mobility in right knee.

Janet J.

When I walked in your door 9 weeks ago I was in chronic pain and walking with the aide of a cane. My entire left side from my waist to my knee hurt badly, as did my right hip. Jessica assessed my disability and set out a plan to rehabilitate me.

Belinda B.

Prior to coming here, I had leg and hip weakness and very limited flexibility due to my pre-op condition. Coming here prior to surgery, helped me to be stronger going into surgery and shortened the recovery time.

Ryan J.

I saw two doctors and tried a month of "self help" exercises before going to Sports and Ortho Beverly. No luck. After seeing Lauren, Jess, Tim and others for four weeks, I went from not being able to squat, kneel or bend to returning to normal activities as well as a normal exercise routine.

Kimberly L.

I have had a problem with piriformis syndrome for the past 3 years. I have been through PT twice - Once with ATI and then with Athletico. I had my doubts when getting another script from my doctor telling me I needed PT.

Trvon T.

When I came into Sports and Ortho, I could barely walk and rotate my knee. If it wasn't for the entire staff, my progress and recovery would not have went so smooth.

Virginia A.

Before I started therapy, I could not get a good night's sleep, could not lie or sleep on my sides, had to put a pillow between my legs to get some relief, was hard to get in and out of bed, could not go up and down steps without holding onto a railing, had to use a cane to do long walking, had to take my time getting out of the car and could only do light house work.

William S.

My knee was in pain before surgery. Christy showed me very helpful stretching techniques before surgery and after. Christy and the rest of the staff are outstanding.

Claudette P.

My experience at Sports & Ortho has been not only a successful experience but also a very inspirational one. Christy and her assistants not only showed me tools I needed in order to reach my recovery but they gave me confidence I needed to get there.

Steven D.

I have been so pleased with the service I received at Sports and Ortho. I don't usually do reviews, but that I thought I would write this one. About a year ago my knee starting hurting and I couldn't even run a half mile without intense pain in my knee.

Stephanie Y.

I think they do a great job. I came here for help with posture and hip pain and got good results on both. Cash is an excellent physical therapist. He really listens and was very attentive to my needs and concerns.

Kelly F.

I had attended Sport & Ortho for an injury screen evaluation regarding a hip injury, and while ultimately, I opted for a different provider closer to my office (thinking convenience is key!), I was thoroughly impressed with Cash.

Bailey L.

I've been coming to this location to see the physical therapist, Cash, for knee pain from running. Cash has done an amazing job helping me rid my knees of the pain I've had, and he does so with a smile on his face and an eagerness to get me back on my feet.

How can physical therapy help me find hip and knee pain relief?

Our Beverly, Bridgeport, Lincoln Park, Northwest Side Chicago, Glenview, Evanston, & Oak Lawn physical therapists will examine your hip and/or knee for signs of misalignment or structural damage, in addition to examining your stance, posture, gait, and range of motion.

After your physical exam is complete, our physical therapists will prescribe a physical therapy plan for you, aimed at relieving unnatural stresses and strains. They will also focus on normalizing your joint function so you can get back to living life comfortably.

You will be given targeted exercises designed for relieving joint pain and stabilizing weak hip and/or knee tissues. The exercises may vary depending on your condition; for example, research has demonstrated that those suffering from patella pain (kneecap pain) tend to respond better to exercises that focus on strengthening both the hips and knees, rather than just focusing on the knees alone.

You may also be given exercises designed to strengthen the core, including your lower back muscle groups, lower abdominal muscle groups, or pelvic muscles. Core exercises are aimed at straightening your posture and equalizing the weight load on both sides of your body.

Additional specialized treatments may also be added as our physical therapists deem fit, such as mobilizations to improve joint movement or other soft tissue treatments that relieve pain and promote the healing of damaged hip and/or knee tissues.

The physical therapy treatments at Sports and Ortho Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine can help to greatly reduce your hip and knee pain. In many cases, your physical therapist can even relieve your pain altogether, sparing you the need for potentially harmful medication or surgical correction.

How did my hip or knee pain develop?

Pain felt in the hips and/or knees may originate in the joints themselves, but it may also be a result of an underlying condition in another part of the body.

For example, your hips and knees are part of the same kinetic chain, meaning they make up a combination of weight-bearing joints that must function together in harmony in order for your body and posture to function properly.

Therefore, a problem with your knee joint may transmit abnormal forces to your hips, and vice versa. If one part of the kinetic chain is out of balance, stress and deterioration may be placed on another.

Your hip is a ball-and-socket joint that works to support the weight of your upper body, relying on multiple muscles and tissues to keep it mobile and stable so it can function properly.

Your knee is a hinge joint, confined to forward-and-backward motions. Individually, your knees support more weight than the hips, 6 times your body weight when doing a squat. Proper movement of both your hips and knees allows complicated motions giving you the ability to stand, walk, run, and dance without falling over.

Hip and knee pains can be experienced together or separately, but it is important to note that as the old saying goes, your knee bone is connected to your hip bone, therefore what happens with one, affects the other.

What might be causing my hip/knee pain?

Many times, the hips and knees suffer the same diseases, disorders, and injuries. For example, overuse injuries such as tendinitis and chronic muscle strain are common in both the hips and knees because both joints are constantly in use. They are also both subject to acute injuries, such as sprains, strains, and dislocation.

Hip and knee pain can also be affected by referred pain from a pinched sciatic nerve, as the nerve travels through both areas. Imbalances in your stance or gait may cause abnormal stresses and premature wear-and-tear in your hips and knees, resulting in painful symptoms or arthritis.

Some painful conditions may be specific to one joint or the other. Cartilage injuries known as labral tears are specific to hip pain, while inflammation of the bursa sacs known as bursitis is a specific condition affecting the knee joint.

However, painful injuries that cause instability in the hips can also affect the knees. Tight hip flexor muscles and weak gluteus medius muscles can cause the hip to rotate inward without you realizing it. This can cause painful problems such as iliotibial band friction syndrome or patellofemoral stress syndrome, as stress is put on the knee or kneecap.
